Quakers, which began as a rather derogatory nickname were created during the time of the English Civil War. As the principles of the group were (and are) equality, simplicity, peace and truth they became associated with the Parliamentarian side of the dispute, very much at odds with the divine right of Kings. On the Restoration of the Monarchy, Quakers were given a hard time, being seen as part of the Protectorate, which was now a failed experiment.
It has been said that Quakers are a church without ministers, on the contrary, Quakers are a church without a congregation. Everyone is a minister. Member or attender, if you are moved to speak in a Meeting then you will have an attentive audience.
